Teaching Experience

Southern University of New Orleans—New Orleans, LA, Associate Professor of Social Work (August 2021-present)

Taught social work classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels.  Classes to date include Human Behavior in the Social Environment, Direct Practice, Field Seminar, Families in Stress and Crisis, Psychopathology and Diagnoses of Children and Youth, Counseling Techniques with Children, Youth and Families.  Chair of the Children, Youth and Families Committee.  Working to establish the PhD program for Social Work, SUNO's first PhD program.

 

Eastern University Social Work Department—St. David’s, PA, Chair of Social Work Department (2020 to 2021)

Chaired the undergraduate social work department of a liberal arts institution offering the BSW degree while writing the CSWE standards for a fully asynchronous online MSW program in trauma-informed advanced generalist practice.

  • Successfully received approval of Benchmark 1 documents by CSWE, allowing the MSW program to proceed.

  • Created the MSW Curriculum for a fully asynchronous online MSW program in trauma-informed care.

  • Taught a variety of classes including: social work practice (BSW), human diversity (BSW), and qualitative methods (PhD Level).

  • Participated in two faculty searches for professors (Social Work and Marriage & Family Therapy).

  • Wrote and received approval for tenure paper to advance to full professor.

 

New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary – New Orleans, LA, Professor (2014 to 2020)

Taught variety of courses in Social Work and Counseling to graduate students. Utilized instructional materials, tools, and aids to support the students in grasping important concepts. Instructed students individually and in groups using various teaching methods, such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations. Guided each student in discovering their unique individual strengths.

  • Designed and implemented course curriculum objectives and assessed student progress throughout the tenure to introduce improvements.

  • Received positive feedback from students and professors for the innovative content and engaging classroom management style.

  • Maintained a professional attitude in all manner of conduct with students, faculty, and parents, including a commitment to confidentiality.

  • Director of Prison Extension Education overseeing six degree programs inside maximum security prisons across four states (undergraduate and graduate).

Provided field placement supervision and oversight to MSW students at a community center. Supervised interns in their fieldwork and oversaw the entire range of field experience. Facilitated interns and students in meeting and exceeding field education objectives. Maintained regular contact with the intern and other agency supervisors involved in the internship.

Taught Introduction to Pastoral Counseling to undergraduate students of Urban Ministry. Assessed students’ skills to determine their needs and to develop teaching plans. Planned, organized, and assigned instructional work specific to each student’s goals. Monitored and evaluated the progress of each student. 

 

Professional Experience

Trinity Christian Community – New Orleans, LA, Executive Director (1998 to 2014)

Played an instrumental role in efficiently managing the daily operations of $2 million inner city, faith-based community development organization. Provided hands-on support in writing and managing large government, city, and private grants in an accurate manner. Spearheaded the management of youth, family, rebuilding, and educational programs from conception to completion and final delivery while staying within budgets and stringent deadlines. Led and hosted 100-member AmeriCorps Program. Facilitated post-Katrina recovery efforts by creating a social safety net in collaboration with 15 other organizations.

  • Successfully raised multimillion dollars to reconstruct homes in post-Katrina New Orleans.

  • Purchased a community center in the midst of an at-risk neighborhood by raising funds.

  • Reduced violent crime in a high-crime neighborhood by 72%.

  • Established an urban pocket farm and market in a food desert.

  • Received awards honoring our service from the President of the United States, the US Attorney General, and the US Marshal Service.
